Accounting Recruitment in London
Most finance hires in London fail at offer stage rather than at shortlist. The reason is benchmarking. Robert Half’s London Financial Controller page, updated for 2027, puts the band at £85,000 to £109,750 with a £95,250 median. Its Greater London page, updated for 2026, puts the same role at £83,750 to £123,000 with a £102,000 median. Two pages from the same publisher disagree by £6,750 at the median, and an employer working from the wrong one loses the candidate in week six.
Morgan Spencer recruits across the full London finance function, from purchase ledger through to Group Financial Controller, on permanent, fixed term and interim briefs.
London salary bands at the senior end
| Role | London 25th / 50th / 75th | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Finance Manager | £70,000 / £81,000 / £91,000 | Robert Half London, updated for 2026 |
| Finance Manager, financial services | £73,750 / £83,250 / £92,250 | Robert Half London, 2026 |
| Financial Controller | £85,000 / £95,250 / £109,750 | Robert Half London, updated for 2027 |
| Group Financial Controller | £113,000 / £140,500 / £159,750 | Robert Half London, 2027 update |
| Accounts Payable or Receivable Manager | £45,500 / £50,750 / £56,000 | Robert Half London, 2026 |
Use the London 2027 figures for London roles and leave the Greater London set alone. Merging the two produces a midpoint that matches no real market and sits above what London candidates are actually accepting.
Below manager level the ladder is steep and worth stating plainly. Robert Half’s 2026 UK guide shows a part qualified management accountant at a £36,750 median against £52,750 once qualified, a 43.5% uplift on the same person finishing their exams. That single step costs more than any other on the ladder.

Accountancy Capital puts typical agency margin on interim finance placements at 10% to 18% above the net rate. For context on the listed end of the market, Hays reported an underlying temporary margin of 15.1% of temp gross revenue for the year to June 2026, down from 15.3%. There is no published REC or APSCo benchmark for UK permanent finance placement fees, so treat any percentage quoted to you as commercial positioning rather than a market rate.
Ask what the margin buys. On a remediation mandate it should cover a candidate who has closed a set of books under audit pressure before, not the first available qualified accountant. Briefing an agency properly is the difference between a shortlist of four and a shortlist of forty.
The hiring market in late 2026
The KPMG and REC Report on Jobs published on 8 October 2026 recorded permanent placements at 50.9, the strongest reading since September 2022, with permanent salaries at 53.4 and temporary wages at 52.6. Total vacancies were still contracting at 48.5, and staff availability continued rising at 57.2.
London behaves differently from the national picture. Anna Purchas, London Office Senior Partner at KPMG UK, said London was one of only two English regions where demand for permanent staff increased in September, and recorded the smallest rise in permanent candidate availability of any region.
Accounting sits at the better end of sector confidence. CIPD’s Summer 2026 Labour Market Outlook recorded a net employment balance of +17 for legal, accounting, consultancy and head office employers, against +9 across all employers, with 62% planning to recruit and a median expected pay award of 3%. Its Spring 2026 reading had legal and accounting at +25. Sector intent is holding while general hiring confidence is not, and how economic uncertainty reshapes hiring strategy is now a finance function question as much as a board one.
Supply is the harder problem. Hays found 92% of accountancy and finance employers faced skills shortages in the year to January 2026, with 49% reporting moderate or severe AI skills shortages. Robert Half reports 45% of businesses plan to grow finance teams while 67% of finance hiring managers will pay more when talent is scarce. The Financial Reporting Council’s October 2026 report showed student numbers rising again after several years of decline, but CIMA fell 3.4% year on year, and LSE Business Review put the big three accountancy bodies down around 14,200 students across the decade.
Counter offers, and what the evidence actually says
Counter offers are the most confidently quoted and least evidenced part of finance recruitment. Here is what holds up.
Robert Half’s 2026 guide found 68% of UK professionals say their salary rose the last time they changed employer, while 61% believe staying with their current employer offers greater salary potential in 2026. Those two findings pull against each other, and that tension is where counter offers land.
On acceptance rates, PRL International reported in July 2026 that roughly half of resigning candidates receive a counter offer and a little more than half of those accept, so around one in four resignations ends with the person staying. The same analysis notes that the widely repeated claim that 80% of counter offer acceptors leave within six months has no traceable study behind it. Emerson Search found in February 2026 that of 356 senior candidates who accepted a counter offer, 70% had left within eighteen months, though that sample is not UK specific.
No official UK counter offer rate exists. Neither does a current ONS or CIPD average tenure figure for finance. Any agency quoting you a precise counter offer percentage is quoting something it cannot source.
Search by function, not by job title
London finance postings in 2026 used Finance Assistant, Finance and Operations Assistant, Purchase Ledger Clerk, Sales Ledger or Billings Clerk, Credit Controller, Transactional Finance Manager, Finance Business Partner, Head of Finance and Bookkeeper for roles that overlap heavily in actual duties. Job titles that tell you nothing about the role are a bigger problem in finance than in most functions, because the ledger work is standardised and the labels are not.
Regulated environments narrow it further. A City finance hire into an FCA authorised firm carries certification and conduct requirements that do not apply in commerce, which is why briefing an agency for FCA regulated hires starts with the regulatory perimeter rather than the job description.
