5 EMPLOYMENT TIPS EVERY TEMP NEEDS TO KNOW

04.04.2017

The world of temping can be a tricky one to navigate. You may be performing the same functions that you are used to in a permanent role but your responsibilities as an employee are different. It is up to you to ensure that you present the best image of yourself possible. What key attributes do you need to ascertain the temp role that you want? Have a look at our ultimate tips for temporary workers below.

1. A polished CV

In 2017, temp roles are fiercely contested, therefore the necessity for a stand out CV is evident. Agencies receive many applications and only the ones meeting the skilled criteria will be shortlisted. In order to reach the shortlist stage, tailor your CV for the role in question, making sure that your skillset reflects the requirements of the role.

The impetus is on you to ensure that the reason you're best suited for the role is right there when the recruiter opens your document. Some recruiters search through a CV database using keywords, so be sure to use business-relevant keywords in your application.

2. Interview tips

The interview stage is make or break for any job but temping interviews can be tricky. Temp roles require the candidate to join a team and hit the ground running immediately so make sure you get across your competency of working within different teams. Being able to learn quickly and cater to a varied set of requirements is also a pivotal issue. Explain how you can be flexible to what the job requires and have an example of a time when you displayed this attribute.

3. Professionalism

Employers will not be impressed by a lackadaisical attitude. It's important to convey that you are not applying for a temp role as a last resort. If asked why you are looking for temporary work, have an answer prepared. Explain that the role is relevant to your experience and you are aiming to boost your CV by working in a variety of organisations before committing to a full time position.

4. Question the recruiters

While you may have a solid CV and a good idea of how to approach the interview, it's paramount to ask some questions during each interview. Asking questions about the company and the role demonstrates your inquisitive side, illustrating the belief that you are serious and invested in each role you commit to.

5. Offer references

If a recruiter is undecided about your ability, a reference from a previous role can be invaluable when trying to attain a job. Positive feedback from a previous manager creates a safety net for the recruiter who can feel more at ease with your potential performance.

Temporary job recruitment is not entirely dissimilar from permanent job recruitment. The process is the same in that the recruiter has to find the optimum candidate for the job therefore you have to approach temporary employment in the same way that you would full-time employment. Make it clear why your skills, experience and personality are the right fit for the role and you will be working in no time.
